MDC to Hold Anniversary Rally in Zimbabwe on Sunday
September 2, 2008
Zimbabwe’s main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party will hold its ninth anniversary celebrations with a rally in central Zimbabwe on Sunday, APA learned Tuesday. MDC officials said main opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai would lead proceedings at the rally scheduled for the third largest city of Gweru on September 7.
The party was formed on September 11 in 1999 and has since inception offered the most plausible challenge to President Robert Mugabe’s 28-year reign over Zimbabwe.
“We have already notified the authorities as required by POSA (Public Order and Security Act) and we do not expect any major hurdles in holding the rally,” said an MDC official.
Zimbabwean political parties have to seek police clearance before convening any gatherings.
Previous MDC meetings have been barred on the grounds of insecurity fears.
