Members of Parliament in Mauritania Condemn Election of Court Judges
September 4, 2008
Members of parliament of the National Front for the Defence of Democracy (FNDD), which condemned the 6 August military coup that toppled President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi, said on Wednesday that the Tuesday election of four High Court judges was “no legal merit”.
MP Mohamed El Mustapha Ould also told a press conference in Nouakchott that the extraordinary session of parliament was illegal because it was convened by the illegal president, junta leader General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz.
He said the session which elected the High Court judges did not have the 48-member quorum since only 32 out of 95 MPs attended the session.
According to MP Bedreddine, the four court judges only represent themselves, not the national assembly.
Bedreddine, who is also the deputy chairman of the Union of Forces for Progress (UFP), a member of the FNDD, reiterated the FNDD demand that Abdallahi be released and reinstated as president.
The 32 MPs of the FNDD parties gathered in a protest group on August 19, the eve of the opening of the extraordinary session of parliament convened by General Aziz.
