Men in Tanzania Urged to Protect Families From HIV/Aids
December 1, 2008
Celebrating World Aids Day on Monday, Tanzanian men have been challenged to protect their families against the killer HIV/Aids and other social ills.
The international health based organization, Engender Health’s Deputy Director, Dunstan Bishanga, made the challenged in Dar es Salaam to commemorate the 20th World’s Aids Day which brought together employers, employees and families from various organizations.
He said that since men were considered as the main carriers of HIV into the homes and families, gender-based violence and other family problems, they should therefore be at the forefront of the efforts to combat HIV/Aids.
The gathering that attracted several HIV/AIDS stakeholders from various institutions went hand in hand with free HIV screening.
“We have decided to take this day as a family day in Tanzania, and that is why we have invited employers, employees and their families in trying to demonstrate the role of employers as well as men in the fight against the pandemic,” he said.
According to statistics issued by UNAIDS in 2007, almost 33 million people globally were HIV-positive, and 25 million of these were in sub-Sahara Africa.
World’s Aids Day is commemorated throughout the globe on every 1 December and this year’s theme is “Stop AIDS - Keep the promise.’
