The chairman of the Primary Health Care Development Agency of Katsina State in northern Nigeria, Dr Ahmed Quabisiyu on Tuesday disclosed an outbreak of Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis (CSM) he said had killed 94 people in the state in the last two months alone.
Quabisiyu told journalists in Katsina, about 520 km from Abuja, that a total of 706 cases of CSM were recorded across the state during the same period.
He said that Kurfi, Safana and Danmusa local government areas were the worst hit.
The chairman added that the state Epidemic Preparedness and Response Committee (EPR) had been revived to check the menace.
He said that the state government had also procured drugs worth N5 million (US40, 000) for the treatment of the infected persons, while 220,000 CSM doses were obtained.
Quabisiyu said that community mobilization and education was being strengthened and that a total of 170 personnel had been trained on the management and early detection of the disease.
According to him, immunization against the disease is going on in the infected areas and appealed to parents to get their children immunised.
”They should also report any outbreak immediately to health clinics nearest to them,” he said.
