Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN) has started the clean up of the Atlantic shoreline after the December 4 crude oil leak from the Qua Iboe Oil fields which it operates in the Niger Delta.
The oil firm had reported a leak on the pipeline on December 4, which caused the discharge of an unknown volume of crude oil into the Atlantic Ocean.
The village head of Atia community in Ibeno, Obong Ukot Esenem Ukot on Saturday in Ibeno, Akwa Ibom State confirmed that the clean up started on Friday night.
“We commend the efforts of the oil company in cleaning up the contaminated shoreline.
“We are also expecting them to send relief materials to fishermen who lost their fishing accessories pending the payment of compensation,” Ukot said.
The company engaged more than 100 youths from the host community for the clean up exercise, which is expected to last for the next 10 days.
A panel comprising officials of the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), the National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and the Akwa Ibom Ministry of Environment and Minerals Resources would be involved in the investigation into the cause of the oil spill.
