Mobile Phone Recycling Centres in East Africa

March 1, 2008

Nokia has launched a recycling initiative in East Africa that offers consumers a structured way to dispose of old mobile phones and accessories.

A statement from Nokia issues on Thursday said consumers can drop off old mobile phones, including headsets from other manufacturers, at designated Nokia centres in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. The devices will be sent to recyclers in Europe for processing.

East Africa Nokia customer care manager Nicholas Maina said the initiative will enhance safe disposal of gadgets.

There has been growing concern over the handling, treatment and disposal of electronic waste because of their chemical compositions, which are toxic and pose a threat to human health and the environment.

This is great move from Nokia towards recycling. It will definitely helps in decreasing the hazardous impact of toxins, which comes out from old mobile phones, if not properly disposed.

Got something to say?
