More Than 170 Survive Plane Crash in Sudan
June 11, 2008
At least 171 people survived the Sudanese Airways plane that burst into flames while landing at Khartoum international airport late on Tuesday, according to investigators on Wednesday.
According to the director of the investigations, Tahir Al-Haj Ibrahim, the investigators are still examining the causes of the crash. He said that 29 people have so far been confirmed dead in the crash.
The plane was carrying more than 200 passengers, and among the survivors, 22 people were said to be seriously injured.
“The Sudan airliner was coming from Amman, the capital city of Jordan, and on its arrival in Khartoum, it was raining. There was a lot of dust, and I think through the process of its landing, something went wrong either with the landing gear or with the machines, and then the plane caught fire,” he explained.
In May, a plane crashed in southern Sudan, killing 23 people, including the region’s presidential advisor and the minister of defense of the government of South Sudan.
