Moroccan Coastal Patrols Intercept 86 Sub-Saharan African Migrants

February 6, 2008

A Moroccan coastal patrol on Tuesday intercepted about 86 Sub-Saharan African illegal immigrants in the city of Nador (north-east) while they were attempting to reach the southern Spanish coast.

According to the Moroccan police, the migrants of different nationalities were about to sail to Spain on board two 25-double horsepower zodiacs.

Since the start of the year, some 466 illegal immigrants have been intercepted in the area, among them 32 Algerians. The others are Sub-Saharan Africans.

In 2007, the Moroccan authorities foiled 10,200 illegal migration attempts to the Spanish coast.

These surveillance operations led to the dismantlement of about 260 illegal migration networks.

Over 8,383 Sub-Saharan African migrants were repatriated between 2004 and 2007, sources said in Rabat.
