Flag of MoroccoMoroccan Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Minister, Saad-Eddine El Otmani, who began Monday a two-day visit to Algiers, said his trip was meant to lend fresh impetus to their bilateral ties and strengthen them further.

“Our visit is part of a shared will by the two countries to take advantage of the present regional and international economic situation”, Othmani told the media upon arrival at the Houari Boumediène airport in Algiers.

He stressed the need to extend the ties between the two countries to new fields and strengthen bilateral cooperation through effective policies furthering their common interests.

The Moroccan Foreign Minister further spoke about the relevance of consultations in reviving the Union of the Arab Maghreb (UMA) which groups Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, and Mauritania.

“We are now aware that some changes have occurred in certain UMA countries and they are changes that can offer better opportunities to neutralize hindrances to Maghreb synergy and integration”, he said.

The UMA has always hit the rocky road with Morocco and Algeria at loggerheads over the Western Sahara issue, heightened by accusations that Algiers was giving active support to the Polisario Front, a separatist movement demanding the independence of the former Spanish enclave, now annexed by Morocco.

Othmani further said his visit to Algiers was a positive demonstration of the two countries’ readiness to “move forward”.

He however added that his trip was barely enough to hold thorough discussion with the Algerians on other burning issues concerning both countries.

“This is just the beginning of a series of consultations between Algeria and Morocco”, he remarked.
