Moroccan Government Vows to Crackdown on Corruption

August 29, 2008

The Moroccan government on Thursday expressed its resolve to sanitize public matters by cracking down on speculation, corruption and embezzlement of public funds. The commitment was reiterated by Prime Minister Abbas El Fassi while addressing the cabinet meeting which discussed the urgent reform projects to be implemented in the country.

The government has pledged to “continue sanitizing public matters” mainly by clamping down on “the price speculation, rent economy, the waste and misappropriation of public funds, corruption, abuse of authority and tax fraud”, the Moroccan PM noted.

The judiciary is among the reform projects to be carried out, the same source claimed.

This pledge comes a week after King Mohammed VI made a speech denouncing “the rapacious speculators” and corruption.

Several measures were announced mainly the strengthening of the competition Council to ensure a “good economic governance” and the setting up of an authority for “Prevention and Corruption”.

These measures come at a time when the cost of living Index is increasing in Morocco above 5% last July against the same period in 2007 with an increase of foodstuffs by about 9,1%. Séverac circles are denouncing the speculation mainly on land.
