Morocco Court Jails Suicide Bomber for Life

July 11, 2008

A Morocco court on Thursday sentenced to life imprisonment Hicham Doukkali for trying to bomb a bus carrying tourists in Meknes, 150 km north of Rabat.

The court sitting in Salé, near Rabat, also sentenced Doukkali’s abettor to ten years in jail for “building a criminal gang”.

The court found the two guilty of producing explosives to commit terrorist acts in Morocco.

Doukkali, 31, had his hand cut off after blasting a gas bottle bomb in an attempt to bomb a tourist bus.

The two, who trained as engineers, are among persons prosecuted for terrorist acts in Morocco.

Since 16 May 2003 suicide attacks, including 12 suicide bombings in the outskirts of Rabat, have killed 45 people.

Moroccan courts have passed 100 terrorism-related verdicts including life imprisonments and acquittals since early 2008.

Moroccan authorities have foiled about 50 terrorist plans since May 2003.
