Morocco Islamist Party Dissolved for Terrorism
February 21, 2008
The Moroccan Prime Minister, Abbas EL Fassi, Wednesday decreed the dissolution of the Islamist party “Al Bdil Al Hadari” (civilisational alternative) for proven “bonds of its principal leaders with a terrorist network dismantled by the security services.”
According to the Moroccan prime ministry, this dissolution follows “the dismantling of the Belliraje terrorist network” and considering the “proven bonds between this network and the creation of the above mentioned party.”
The Bellirage network is named after Abdelkader Bellirage, a Moroccan living in Belgium.
The same source also mentioned serious pieces of evidence “on the implication of the party leaders” in this network comprising 32 members of various socio-professional categories.
The charged officials are chiefly the secretary-general of the party Mustapha Mouatassim and Mohammed Amine Regala, member/leader of the same party.
Authorised since 2005, the party took part in the 7 September 2007 legislative elections without winning any seat out of the 325 seats of the Lower House of the Moroccan Parliament.
The decision of the Moroccan PM was made in accordance with article 57 of the October 2006 Law on political parties.
This article stipulates the dissolution of “any party which would incite armed demonstrations in the street, or which would show, by its form and its military or paramilitary organization, feature of armed groups or vigilante or whose purpose would be to seize power by force, to attack the Islamic religion, the monarchical system or the territorial integrity of the Kingdom.”
The “jihadist-like” network is allegedly linked to organizations “active in Morocco and abroad,” APA learned in the capital.
