Mortar Shells Land on Mogadishu Airport, One Dies
June 23, 2008
Mortar shells rained down on Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu on Monday morning. One of the stray shells landed in a camp for displaced persons located between the airport and KM4 junction, killing at least one person, residents told APA.
According to eyewitnesses, at least three mortar shells landed inside the airport as the Somali Prime Minister was about to fly from the airport; however no casualties were reported. One of the airport staff told APA on condition of anonymity that one of the shells landed on the airport runway but that nobody was hurt.
One of the stray shells landed at the Bulo Tekneko displaced persons’ camp at a kiosk where many IDPs were shopping.
“One of the mortars landed near a kiosk, and a young boy of 15 died at the same time as four others were injured, among them a pregnant woman, who was immediately rushed to the hospital,” Fartun Abdullahi, one of the IDPs told APA.
This ongoing violence in Mogadishu comes despite the new truce agreement recently signed between the Somali government and the opposition alliance based in Asmara, a group which included both moderates and hardliners, and which was meant to end the Iraq-style insurgency and usher in a ceasefire in the beleaguered capital city.
