Real Review - Be Kind, Rewind
March 3, 2008
You know? I expected more from this. It was Jack Black being Jack Black in that same irritating way Jim Carrey used to be Jim Carrey (does that make sense?).
And it had a Break’n 2 Electric Boogaloo sorta’ feel to it…You know, everybody coming together to save a beloved neighborhood landmark? Yeah.
The movie is very anti-gentrification and pro-Fats Waller. And that part, I kinda’ loved, being from DC and watching the city tear down all the cool, underground clubs and ruining their respective “scenes” to turn everything into suburban hell.
But really, the only funny parts of this movie were the “Sweded” movies, the 20 minute re-makes Mos Def and Jack Black make together. There just wasn’t enough of that.
Though, there is some very subtle imagery, that I also dug…The video magnetizing effects and the very subtle title changes through-out the film, where the letters set themselves like the inside of a VCR.
I really expected to laugh more than I did, and I expected less syrupy, sweet, sentimentality.
I hate to do it, but this just gets the from me. Seriously, one couple even walked out.
PARENTS: Nothing objectionable, though one family, who couldn’t find a sitter had to take their bored, screaming, four year-old out.
P.S. What the hell was Mia Farrow doing in this flick??? That was the most random cameo, ever. And while we’re at it…so was Ripley, man??
P.P.S. Since the homemade movies, were the best part of the film, the link to all them, is forthcoming in this section.
