Real Reviews - Smokin’ Aces HD DVD

June 8, 2008

Buddy “Aces” Israel must be stopped and that means kill him and rip out his heart. So goes the premise for Smokin’ Aces, an action-thriller that asks the question, “Can a plot so thin possibly fill-out a movie for two hours?” The answer is decidedly “no.”

Buddy is a star on the Las Vegas strip with his magic act. When the fame comes so does his desire to rub shoulders with the local bad boys. Buddy is a fast riser in the crime world, but there comes a day his star must fall. The hit is put out for a million dollars. Kill Buddy and bring his heart to the chief crime lord, Primo Sparazza. Yep. It’s our friends the Italian mafia again.

The race is on for the big payday, and several groups of hired killers descend upon Las Vegas. Of course, the FBI get wind of it all and make Buddy rat-out his associates. Who will get to Buddy first, the bad guys or the FBI? Does it really matter?

True, there is a lot of shooting, blood splattering, and things going boom, but somehow it just doesn’t fulfill. Smokin’ Aces doesn’t have a soul. The plot is so linear, and the characters so one-dimensional, that there is really no need to care what happens to poor Buddy. And I didn’t care.

I watched Smokin’ Aces on HD DVD and the PQ was decent. The audio track was the typical Dolby Digital Plus and it was uninspiring, though adequate. The disc also includes a bunch of filler for extras, because what could one possibly want to add to this flick?
