Real Review - There Will be Blood
March 9, 2008
There Will Be Blood is set in the late 19th century and early 20th century at the beginning of the huge push for oil. Such companies as Standard were working to take over the entire country’s supply of oil to have a monopoly. Daniel Day Lewis’s character (Daniel Plainview) is an independent oil man that is against Standard. He catches wind of a possibly magnificent opportunity for oil and decides to check it out. This is where the party is started. Craziness then begins to flow in. Great plot and screenplay build the base for a terrific film.
Everything Else
It is a classic Paul Thomas Anderson film exhibiting the genuine intensity to be expected from his films. There Will Be Blood strikes to the heart of so many valuable life issues that it feels simple, yet has the complexity to warrant many viewings. The soundtrack was excellent carrying the intensity of the film on its shoulders like a child. The soundtrack was in control and absolutely made the film. Not to say any other aspect of the film was not amazing, but just that the soundtrack was genius and an essential element for the film.
The authentic scenery and landscape sucks you into the time period beautifully and makes you feel like you are there immediately. Daniel Day Lewis was phenomenal as usual. He takes a character and presents him flawlessly. The intensity in his eyes is enough to make the part, but the accent and mannerisms were brilliant.
The scripting was equally good when held up to the other aspects of the film. The dialogue and directing of There Will Be Blood came together to make for excellent conversations between the characters. This all tied into the story with perfect precision and allowed me to be consumed by the power of the film.
The Real Deal
I have always been a fan of Paul Thomas Anderson’s work, but I believe this is the best yet. Magnolia was certainly great and deserves another watch and Punch Drunk Love is completely under appreciated by many. With the addition of Daniel Day Lewis’s acting though, Anderson has had the opportunity to reach new heights. There Will Be Blood is a unique film that won’t be loved by all, but should be respected by all. One of the amazing things about the film is its lack of language, sex, and violence. There are only a couple graphic scenes of violence which got it the R rating, but everything else is pretty clean.

finally got around to watching the infamous There Will Be Blood… Daniel-Day Lewis’ performance was top-notch. He takes well to the overbearing, violent father-figure role — he also did this in Gangs of New York.
