Mozambican Police Abort Zimbabwe Solidarity March

June 27, 2008

Mozambican police on Friday aborted a Zimbabwe solidarity march organized by civil society organizations concerned over their neighbors who where frog-marched to polling stations in the second round of the a presidential election with only one candidate.

The Center for Mozambican and International Studies, CEMO and the Human Rights League, LDH, had organized a pacific march from Robert Mugabe Square in central Maputo, to the Zimbabwean embassy to submit a petition, but police issued a last minute warning discouraging it.

“We advise you that your march should not go ahead because there is another march scheduled for the same time and we do not have enough officials to accompany your march”, read a brief statement from the General Police Command.

A group of armed policemen and private security manned the Robert Mugabe square where a group of marchers had gathered.

The other march stated in the statement is unknown to the media and police refused to give details.

LDH spokesman, Custodio Duma told APA that police action show sympathy and complicity with Mugabe, along with other regional leaders regarding the Zimbabwean crisis.
