Mozambique Issues International Tender to Upgrade Quelimane Airport

July 25, 2008

Mozambique’s airports company, ADM, said on Friday it had issued a multi-million dollar tender to modernize and enlarge Quelimane Airport in the country’s central province of Zambezia.

ADM spokesperson Sandra Garcia told APA that the upgrading project will boost the airport’s capacity for both passengers and cargo, and allow for several Boeing 737-200s to use the facility at the same time.

”ADM has issued a multi-million dollar tender to upgrade the Quelimane airport including the building of new airport shops and office premises”, she said in interview.

“Construction should start in one year beginning January 2009 to meet our plans of serving tourists during the 2010 FIFA World Cup event in South Africa”, she said.

ADM has awarded several contracts for massive refurbishment of airports in Maputo, Pemba and Vilanculos to China’s Anhui Foreign Economic Construction Corporation (AFECC).

Refurbishment of Maputo International Airport will cost US$75 million and Mozambique has sourced funding from the Chinese.
