Mozambique to Export Power to Swaziland
March 19, 2008
Mozambique said on Wednesday that it was ready to export power directly to Swaziland at the request from its Hydro electro power station at Cabora Basa Dam located on the River Zambezi, a senior government official told APA.
South Africa’s electricity utility, Eskom, recently suspended exports to Swaziland after its own internal shortfall which has affected largely the mining sector in that country.
Energy Minister Salvador Namburete said Swaziland could find an alternative in Mozambique to meet its needs since South Africa was now unable to sell it electricity.
“If they (Swaziland) request us, we will respond positively. We have that capacity. Cabora Basa is set to increase its production capacity and we are also working on other energy alternatives”, he said in an exclusive interview.
Swaziland receives 80 percent of its electricity from South Africa and could get the remaining 20 percent from Mozambique.
In February, Eskom reduced the power it supplies to Southern African countries after openly admitting that it, too, was running out of capacity to meet local energy needs.
