Mugabe Threatens to Wage War If He Loses Elections
June 14, 2008
President Robert Mugabe has accused the United States of secretly funding the presidential election campaign of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and has repeated his threat to wage war if he loses this month’s run-off. Addressing thousands of supporters of his ZANU PF party during the burial of a retired army officer on Saturday, Mugabe said the George W. Bush administration indirectly provided US$70 million to fund the run-off campaign for MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
“As I speak to you, Mr Bush has provided US$70 million for opposition use, this time through indirect means,” Mugabe said during the burial of Amoth Chingombe.
He however did not say how the funds were channeled to the MDC.
The Zimbabwean leader, who is fighting for political survival after losing to Tsvangirai in the first round in March, has repeatedly blamed the US and former colonial master, Britain, for seeking to topple him from power.
“We want to make it clear to the Americans and the British that we are no one’s subjects…Never again shall this country come under the control of the white men, direct or indirect,” added a defiant Mugabe.
He said his party was ready to defend Zimbabwe’s sovereignty, even if it meant going to war.
“We shall never ever accept anything that smells of a delivered parcel that comes through what they call the MDC here,” he said.
This was the third time since Thursday that the Zimbabwean leader has threatened to wage war if he loses the elections.
Chingombe was a retired army officer who once commanded the Southern African Development Community forces that defended the Democratic Republic of Congo against insurgents during the 1990s.
