President Mugabe Says Challenger is “worse Than a Prostitute”
February 22, 2008
Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has for the first time publicly reacted to the decision by his former finance minister Simba Makoni to contest next month’s presidential election against him, describing the youthful politician as “worse than a prostitute.”
In a television interview to mark his 84th birthday, Mugabe attacked Makoni for breaking ranks with the ruling ZANU PF party and deciding to run against him in polls scheduled for March 29.
Makoni shook ZANU PF to its foundations when he announced on February 5 that he would challenge his boss in the March polls.
Famous for personal attacks on his opponents, Mugabe likened the former finance minister to a prostitute or an opportunist who had no support base in the country. “So I have compared him to a prostitute. A prostitute could have stood up also saying, ‘I have boyfriends in the MDC, others are in ZANU PF… But you see, a prostitute could have done better than Makoni because she has clients,” Mugabe said.
The Zimbabwean leader was confident his party would romp to victory when the nation votes in combined presidential, parliamentary, senatorial and council elections in the forthcoming polls.
He rapped Britain and her Western allies for continuing to push for regime change in Zimbabwe, insisting that his government would resist any interference in the country’s internal affairs.
“As long as the British continue in their campaign to bring about regime change here, we will also continue to resist them,” Mugabe said.
The West has accused Mugabe’s government of ruining what was once one of Africa’s model economies and of human rights abuses against his opponents.
