Multi-vehicle Pile Up in Egypt Kills At Least 25

February 7, 2008

At least 25 people were killed and 16 injured in Egypt when a minibus collided with two trucks, causing collisions with six other cars to the south of Cairo, the MENA national news agency reported.

The accident, which occurred early on Thursday, may have been caused by poor visibility due to thick fog coupled with excessive speeds. A truck carrying bricks overturned and many of the victims died as they left their vehicles to check for damage to their cars.

Road accidents are common in this North Africa country, with 6,000 people killed and more than 30,000 injured in 2006 alone. Experts cite poor transport conditions and a failure by drivers to observe traffic rules as the main causes of accidents.

Egyptian authorities have launched a large-scale campaign to reduce traffic accidents.
