Mumbai Kids Launch New ‘Quit India Movement’ Against Tobacco

June 1, 2008

‘The evil is inside us, Bharat Ko Tambaku se Azaad Karna Hai’ (We have to free the country from tobacco).  This is the new Quit India slogan coined by the students of Mumbai for the World No Tobacco Day on May 31.

Children playing freedom fighters like Gandhiji, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Lokmanya Tilak, Maulana Azad, Bhagat Singh, Sarojini Naidu, Subhash Chandra Bose and Rani Laxmi Bai are launching a new Quit India movement, called the ‘Quit Tobacco Movement’. A troupe of 25 children divided into three teams will perform their play at railway stations, malls and other public places in Mumbai  to create awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco.

The Project has been conceived by Salaam Mumbai Foundation, with a view to empower students to fight the war against tobacco using unique weapons like art, theatre and music.

The World Health Statistics Report (2008) has confirmed that heart diseases, obesity and tobacco use are among the leading causes of deaths worldwide. The number of deaths from non-communicable chronic conditions,  the risk to which is exacerbated by tobacco use, is alarmingly rising far more than the number of deaths from communicable diseases like HIV, TB or malaria. Tobacco use has been found to kill one-third to one-half of its users, according to this report.
