Namibia’s National Broadcaster Bows in to Workers’ Demands
January 31, 2008
Striking workers at Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) returned to work on Thursday after management bowed down to their demands of a six percent salary rise and a nine percent increment backdated to 2003.
“We have agreed to sign a memorandum which says that NBC will pay the money if the employees suspend the industrial action,” NBC director-general Bob Kandetu said here on Thursday.
“It is only fair that we take care of our employees to give them the capacity to survive financially,” Kandetu said.
Demanding a six percent salary increase, NBC workers went on strike Tuesday - virtually grounding to a halt all programming on national television and radio stations.
During the two-day strike, no programs were aired on TV and all state radio stations, while the workers continued to picket outside the broadcaster’s offices.
