Namibian Workers Want “corrupt” Cabinet Ministers Fired
September 26, 2008
The National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) has added its voice to calls by the ruling Swapo party’s Youth League wing that two cabinet ministers should be fired from their posts for corruption in a deal that shows that the ministers mortgaged the country’s Etosha national park to a USA development fund.
NUNW said on Thursday that works and transport minister Helmut Angula should resign forthwith, blaming him for a strike at rail operator TransNamib, which crippled the operator’s operations three weeks ago.
The Union also claimed Thursday that it had evidence that former environment and tourism minister Willem Konjore signed away Etosha national park to the US under the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA). Konjore is now minister of youth, sports and culture.
“Helmut Angula must do the most honorable thing and resign voluntarily, failure to which we call on the Swapo Party to withdraw him from its parliamentary list,” NUNW said.
“We are all aware of both the economic and political situations in Namibia and the region at large, and we cannot watch while our economy and country’s economic progress is sabotaged by those who are only fighting for their individual interests,” NUNW said.
The union blamed the opposition Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) of trying to sabotage the operations of strategic parastatals in the country through the interferences of its “stooges.”
The Swapo Youth League first called on the resignation of the two ministers, citing corruption tendencies, last week.
The union did not state what action it would take should government fail to act on the two cabinet ministers.
