National Aboriginal Veterans Monument Receives Canadian Federal Support

June 22, 2008

The Government of Canada will help fund work on the National Aboriginal Veterans Monument, which honours fallen Aboriginal servicemen and women. The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, has announced a contribution to the National Aboriginal Veterans Association for changes to the monument located in Confederation Park.

The Government is providing the maximum amount available through Veterans Affairs Canada’s Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program-$25,000. When the project is finished, the monument will sit on a four-sided granite stone plinth into which four bronze panels will be set. The panels will depict the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War and Peacekeeping.

“This monument is a beautiful work of art that pays tribute to the role Canada’s Aboriginal men and women have played in defending peace and freedom,” said Minister Thompson. “Their bravery and sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
