zimbabwe1A strike by Zimbabwe’s civil servants has paralyzed services at most government institutions, with skeletal staff offering limited services at public hospitals in the capital Harare.

Teachers, health personnel and other government workers went on strike last Friday after wage negotiations with their employer ended in a deadlock.

Their unions have asked government to pay the workers $630 a month for the lowest paid worker, from the current $120 monthly pay. The cash-strapped government, however, said it could only afford to pay $160 for general staff and $236 for senior personnel.

Service was very slow at Harare Hospital as senior health personnel attended to mostly emergency patients. The strike also disrupted classes at most public schools in Harare as teachers refused to pick up their pieces of chalk.

The country’s justice system also was not spared as courts remained closed on Monday.
