South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) new Group Chief Executive Officer, Solly Mokoetle, has said that his first task in the corporation will be to restore its credibility and image.
Mokoetle was speaking in Johannesburg after being appointed by the SABC’s interim board to the high media post. He will take up the position from 1 January 2010, according to the television broadcaster here.
Mokoetle said that his first challenge was to stabilize the corporation and restore its integrity.
He added that he would begin this task by ensuring that the public broadcaster services the financial guarantees that it had received from the National Treasury as well as the banks.
Mokoetle further said he would ensure that the SABC returned to the appropriate role that it had always played.
Interim Board Chairperson Irene Charnley said Mokoetle was selected as a suitable candidate following vigorous and necessary processes.
He is not a newcomer to the SABC, as he worked at the broadcaster previously for 12 years, occupying various executive positions.
In 1994 he was as one of the executive members who were appointed to transform the SABC into a public broadcaster.
He has had various leadership roles in both radio and television, in addition to operational management at the broadcaster.
