New Irish Ballad Group The High Kings to Feature in Music Special

January 8, 2008

manhattan-records-the-high-small.jpgAn all-new music special featuring what has been described as the most exciting Irish ballad group to emerge since The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem electrified the worldwide folk revival of the 1960s.

The High Kings take some of the classic ballad repertoire from the past and mix them with new and exciting modern songs in the folk idiom. The engaging four-man singing group — Finbarr Clancy, Martin Furey, Brian Dunphy, and Darren Holden — is well on its way to becoming the hottest folk and ballad act of the new millennium, seeking to reinvigorate and reenergize the songs we all know and love and put them back in the forefront of the Irish experience, at home and abroad.

The music reflects a wide range of moods, from the rousing “Rocky Road to Dublin” to the haunting strains of “The Parting Glass” to the irresistible sing-along cheerfulness of “The Wild Rover.”

Tune in to the world premiere of The High Kings on WTTW/11 is Sunday, January 13 at 5:30 p.m.

Who do we contact for concert tour info or potential? HK so fresh, that info is scant even for PBS stations.

Why does Darren Holden need to be part of a group?
He was the star of a major Broadway show and has had amazing reviews across America.

He may like the dynamic of being part of a group for a while. You could try his website and send him a message.

Darren is a great talent and a star in his own right as are Brian Finbarr and Martin they have all done some amazing work . I was at the recording of the show in Dublin and these guys will be the next big thing to come out of ireland their passion and drive for what they do is mesmerising. Their live show as i saw it was spectacular and you only get a small indication on their website http://www.thehighkings.com of how good this singing and harmonising really is. They will be all over the states on every PBS station so check them out when you can i believe their CD and DVD will be released on the 26th of Feb.

I saw Darren 3 times, twice on Broadway and once at the Chicago Auditorium in Movin Out. I am really surprised he is in the High King’s, but hey, at least that makes me a fan of the group right?
Can’t wait to hear the other guys too!

I have to agree I just watched the live show played on our local PBS station and it was wonderful. I am looking forward to seeing them when they are in the area. I understand they will be in Burlington Vermont in May- I will surely be there.
    Thanks

Saw this group on our public television Tuesday evening. They are so much better than the affected group of Celtic Women that have taken over what was great Irish music. This group didn’t need as many special effects, just amazing voices. They stayed true to the music, as opposed to “Americanizing” it for public consumption.
I am a fan. I too will eagerly await their CD.

My husband and I would like to see the High Kings at the Bob Carr Center on
May 5th. We enjoyed seeing them on WFME in Orlando this evening.

Absolutely beside myself when I saw THE HIGHS KINGS on PBS. I go back to the 50s and the Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem. In fact, about 12 or so years ago I took my granddaughter on a Tour sponsored by Paddy Clancy . We had the time of our lives. This is still my favorite type of IRISH music.

To add to what I wrote previously - I enjoyed a concert by the Furey’s in Carnegie Hall may years ago.

Wow what talent. Saw The High Kings on RTE 1 (Ireland) recently they’ve got what it takes.
Any plans to appearing in Ireland?

    Dear High Kings,

I sent you an email some months ago when you were scheduled to appear in Burlington, Vermont. I had asked you to say, just before the song “Wyld Mountain Thyme”, “This is for Marsha.” Since then, there has been a rescheduling till the 12th of September, and we will be there.

I’m FBI — Full Blooded Irish, with great and grand parents from Mayo and Cork — but my wife is Jewish and has fallen in love with Irish music.

It would mean the world to her if one of you would just say, before “Wyld Mountain Thyme,”, “This is for Marsha.’

    Thank you.

    Larry Booker

    Thank you, again.

Got something to say?
