January 2, 2008

The new Japanese ambassador to Malawi, Hiroshi Matsumoto said on Tuesday that his government was committed to assisting Malawi in her development initiatives through the implementation of the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy (MDGS).

Speaking during the official opening of the diplomatic mission in Lilongwe on New Year’s Day, he said, Malawi’s national development efforts are continuing to record high economic growth resulting into sustainable economic and social development.

“This record has attracted more donors to this country including Japan and we will try as much as possible to assist the country’s developing efforts at all levels,” he said.

The Japanese government has supported several activities in Malawi such as improvement of road infrastructure, groundwater development, rehabilitation of irrigation schemes, improvement of rural health facilities, and the One Village One Product (OVOP) project, a strategic movement of products designed specifically for regional development.

The minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Joyce Banda said Malawi is one of the world’s largest recipients of Japanese volunteers, and the opening of the embassy will help to coordinate the work of the volunteers more efficiently.
