The Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) of Sierra Leone has issued the final certificate of registration to a newly formed political party called the Citizens’ Democratic Party (CDP) months before elections are supposed to take place.
Whilst welcoming the CDP to the country’s political fold, Justice Samuel Ademusu, the chairman of the PPRC told the party’s stalwarts on Friday that their party was now qualified to engage fully in national politics.
Joshua Carew, the interim chairman of the CDP, he assured the regulation body for the country’s politics that his party would practice decent politics in accordance with the laws of the land.
He said his party which had established regional offices in all parts of the country would help provide the electorate with an alternative political choice in the next presidential and parliamentary elections.
The Citizens’ Democratic Party is the seventh political party to register fully with the PPRC to contest with other major political parties in this year’s multi-tier elections.
Sierra Leone will hold parliamentary and presidential elections in November. President Ernest Bai Koroma who was in 2007 elected for first five-year term has announced his intention to run for a second mandate.
Several deaths were reported last year as his ruling All People’ Congress clashed with supporters of perennial rivals the Sierra Leone People’s Party in the country’s second city Bo.
Since the formal end to a decade-long civil war in 2002, Sierra Leone has made remarkable progress in democracy. It has since experienced a peaceful handover of power from wartime leader Ahmed Tijan Kabba to current President Koroma.
