New US Sanctions Against Zimbabwe Expected By Mid-July, Official Says
July 1, 2008
The United States is set to announce new sanctions against Zimbabwe within the next two weeks, a US government official announced Monday.
US White House spokeswoman Dana Perino announced in Washington that a raft of tougher new economic and diplomatic sanctions against the Zimbabwean government would be in place by mid-July.
President Robert Mugabe’s government has come under fire after a controversial election that was boycotted by the opposition over allegations of state-sponsored violence.
“We just need to give them a week or two to think about that,” Perino said.
Mugabe is accused of hounding opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai out of a crucial presidential election run-off held last Friday.
Tsvangirai claimed that nearly 90 of his supporters were murdered by pro-government militias in the run-up to the polls.
He was also denied permission to campaign.
The US and other Western countries already have targeted sanctions against Mugabe’s government under which the Zimbabwean leader is barred from traveling to Western countries.
