January 8, 2008
President Mwai Kibaki on Tuesday evening named part of his cabinet, comprising 17 ministers ahead of the opening of Parliament next week.
In a surprise move, Kibaki named the leader of the opposition Orange Democratic Movement-Kenya (ODM-K), Kalonzo Musyoka as Kenya’s Vice-President and also minister for Home Affairs, a clear indicator that Kibaki’s intention is to form a government of national unity.
Musyoka came third with over 800,000 votes behind Raila Odinga with 4.3 million votes and President Mwai Kibaki who won the highly disputed December 27 general elections with 4.5 million votes Kibaki said that by forming the cabinet he had considered the importance of keeping the country united, peaceful and prosperous under a strong, broad-based leadership.
In his address to the nation through the state owned Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) from the State House in Nairobi, President Kibaki said that the rest of the cabinet will be named in due course after leaving out other key ministries such as Lands, National heritage, Youths and Environment, among others.
