Nigeria’s Electricity Generation Drops By Over 800MW
March 12, 2008
The state-run Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) has blamed inadequate gas supply to fire turbines in the power plants for worsening the erratic supply of electricity in the country which has dropped to over 800 mega watts.
The shortfall in gas supply has reduced the daily power generation capacity from 800 Mega Watts to 100 MW (i.e. 700MW decline) at the Egbin power plant and also a daily shortfall of 150mw at Geregu plant, a statement published Monday night in Abuja by the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) said.
The PHCN confirmed a steady decline in gas supply, for some months now, from the Nigeria Gas Company (NGC) to Egbin and Geregu power stations, both in suburbs of Lagos, due to the build-up of condensate in the Escravos gas pipeline in the Niger Delta.
The Nigerian Gas Company (NGC) this week commenced the pigging of the Escravos gas pipeline to evacuate the condensate, which further reduced gas supply to the power stations,” the PHCN general manager, public affairs, Efuru Igbo, said in the statement.
According to the statement, inadequate gas supply is compounded with the outset of the dry season. This is when dams that supply water to the hydro power stations are at their lowest level thereby limiting their generation capacity.
Nigeria supplies electricity to some West African countries and the problem of supply in the country will affect the nation’s ability to fulfill its commitment to these countries.
