Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), has said that the government was set to implement welfare recommendations that would chart a road map for a better and efficient police force.
Onovo, who addressed officers at the Delta Command in Asaba in the Niger Delta, gave the assurance of a better welfare package to boost their morale.
“We are in a threshold of having a new police force ; we have even started by changing your attitude. You must protect the innocent, the weak, ensure equity and be a model.
“What the panel recommended for the least police officer is mouth watering. I implore you not to lose hope because better things are on the way. It is for real,” he said.
He said that he was on the visit to talk to the officers on their expectations on the governorship elections in Anambra State scheduled to take place on Saturday.
“Then I also came around to see you. I have been trailing with keen interest the happenings in your state, and the challenges you face on a daily basis.
“I have also noted the sacrifice that the command has made, those who died for others to live from this command as a result of the militancy in the Niger Delta region,” he said.
Onovo said that the force was aware of the challenges that faced the officers in terms of logistics and welfare problems.
“That was why the M.D Yusuf Reform Panel was set up and they came up with 125 recommendations and a road map to a better, efficient and effective police force,” he added.
He said that security all over the world was expensive and technology driven and that there was little or nothing for an illiterate to contribute in the wake of the present challenge.
“That is why the reform committee was set up and they recommended a better pay, training, equipment, housing and barracks accommodation to meet with the demands of today’s policing.
“Today’s policing does not give room for illiterates because this is a computer age and you have to learn to use computers and other sophisticated security equipment.
“This is a clarion call for you to improve yourselves so that you will still be relevant in the policing of the 21st century,” Onovo advised.
Earlier, Alhaji Yakubu Alkali, Commissioner of Police in Delta State, said the command was prepared to key into the IGP’s three point agenda.
“These include training and retraining of officers and men, intelligence led policing and zero tolerance for corruption,” he said.
