Nigeria Hosts 3rd Africa Conference on Sexual Health

February 3, 2008

More than 500 delegates across the globe are to participate in the third Africa Conference on Sexual Health and Rights (SHR) which opens in Abuja on Monday.

The convener of the conference, Dr Uwen Esiet, told journalists on Sunday in Abuja that some of the delegates were already in Abuja.

He said that the conference was being convened by Africa Health Incorporated (AHI), under the auspices of the African Federation for Sexual Health Rights (AFSHR).

AFSHR is the regional representative of World Association for Sexual Health.

According to him, the conference will take stock of responses to sexual health and rights on the continent and explore the link between poverty and sexual health and rights.

Esiet said that the participants would examine the centrality of sexuality in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

He said that the ability of participants to engage regional institutions to incorporate SHR issues within the African framework for achieving the MDGs would come under focus.

He said that the conference would also prepare policy briefs and critical analysis of sexual health and rights issues.
