The Nigerian Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has registered three new political parties, bringing the number of political parties in the country to 57.
The new parties are the National Transformation Party, the Democratic Front for the People and the Federation and Congress for Progressives.
The Commission’s spokesman, Emmanuel Umenger, told APA on Friday in Abuja that the parties were registered to foster democracy and expand the political horizon.
“It is the commission’s duty to create a platform for everyone who wish to participate in active politics,” he said.
In a statement issued in Abuja signed by the Secretary General, Agbo Major, the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), an association of opposition parties, has commended the Commission for registering the three new political parties.
Mr. Major stated that the registration of more parties was a positive development and a reaffirmation of the country’s liberal democracy.
The CNPP saluted the leaders of the new political parties and urged them to join it in the effort to entrench sustainable democracy in the country.
He charged the parties to be proactive on national issues as well as uphold issue-based campaigns to attract the electorate.
