Many Nigerian Catholics joined a peaceful rally in Lagos against the liberalization of the abortion law, an action organized by the Order of the Knight of Muluba (KSM) of the Lagos Metropolitan Council.
Demonstrators who displayed placards with anti-abortion slogans, offered prayers for peace in the country.
One of the demonstrators, Christopher Aligbe, said the aim of the rally was to discourage the government from legalizing abortion.
He said the rally was also to sensitize the public, youth and women to the importance of life which is sacred and holy.
“The rate of illegal abortion is already high in the country and it will not speak well for our country if abortion is legalized,” he said.
The Metropolitan Secretary of KSM, Brother Boniface Nwabuko, said that indulging and accepting the act would result in encouraging the youth in immoral acts and denying life to the unborn child.
“The church regards life as sacred and the power of life is from God ; irrespective of our religion, life should be considered holy immediately from conception,” he said.
He said the government should ensure that infrastructures were in place for enhancing health care services.
Abortion issues have continued to generate controversies, as many people support the liberalization of abortion laws in Nigeria because they believe that it will lead to reduction in associated morbidity and mortality.
