The Nigerian narcotic agency, the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has so far this year secured the conviction of 161 out of 511 suspects arrested for drug related offenses in Katsina State, home state of ailing President Umaru Yar’Adua.
The state NDLEA commander, Ahmed Garba, said on Sunday in Katsina, that the convicts were sentenced to various jail terms by the Federal High Court in Katsina where they were charged during the year.
He said that among the suspects arrested across the state, were nine women, as well as some notorious drug dealers.
He said the agency had during the year successfully counseled and rehabilitated 248 addicts at its office, while some suspects were referred to the State’s reformatory center, Babbar Ruga.
According to him, the agency has also seized a total of 178.9 kilograms of various illicit drugs which comprised mostly Indian hemp and other psychotropic substances.
The commander attributed the success of the NDLEA in the state to the support and cooperation of the government and people of the state.
Garba expressed the agency’s determination in controlling the menace and called for the continuation of community support to achieve the task.
