Flag of NigeriaThe Nigerian government has lifted its decision to ban the national football team, the Super Eagles, from participating in Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and Confederation of African Football competitions in the next two years.

Following the Super Eagles’ dismal performance that led them to an early exit from the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan imposed a two-year ban for the national team.

After receiving the official banning orders of the team from participating in all international tournaments, FIFA gave the Nigerian government until Monday afternoon to revoke the decision.

“The Nigerian Government has today confirmed in a letter to FIFA that it has revoked its decision to withdraw Nigeria’s participation in all FIFA and CAF organized competitions of the next two years,” FIFA said in a statement made available to Bua News Online here Tuesday.

After dissolving the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) by the government, FIFA also said that Abuja has now recognized the currently elected executive of the NFF.

As a result, the NFF remains vested with all its statutory rights, FIFA added.

The dramatic u-turn on the Super Eagles international ban follows mediation talks between FIFA Executive Committee member, Amos Adamu, and the Nigerian government.

The unbanning orders letter was received by FIFA before the deadline, FIFA said.
