Nigeria has said there was no reason why Africa should remain a continent of lamentation to the extent that it had formed 70% of the subject of discussions at the UN.
The country’s Foreign minister Ojo Maduekwe has expressed the concern in Abuja when he hosted Dr Jean Ping, the AU Chairman in his residence.
“The African issue is very attractive because it is a feel-good diplomacy that deals with challenges of pandemic and poverty in Africa.
“Everybody is running over each other at the UN to discuss Africa. The time has come for Africa to be the least talked about continent in terms of bad news,” pointing out that the configuration of crises showcased by the western media should not be African.
“While the continent appreciates all the assistance and supports it had enjoyed from partners, there is need for it to evolve its home grown solutions to solving its problems and challenges.’’
Maduekwe who made particular reference to the Sudanese crises explained that the just concluded AU Peace and Security Council meeting in Abuja was one such solutions to showcase that as a continent, Africa is more determine to resolve its internal conflicts.
The minister who commended Ping’s leadership style noted that AU had stepped up its achievements in the area of accountability and good governance.
“The AU is going beyond diagnosing of its problems to now benchmarking the solutions and holding each other accountable,’’ he said.
Ping congratulated Nigeria for its election as a non permanent member of the UN Security Council.
He noted that Nigeria’s membership at the UN was very important and crucial for the continent taking into cognizance the country’s leadership role and commitment to the survival of the continent.
