125px-Flag_of_Nigeria.svg-Copy9The Speaker of Nigeria’s lower legislative body, the House of Representative, Dimeji Bankole, has called for a more urgent and systematic action to face the challenges of climate change.

In a message on the 2009 United Nation’s Day celebration in Abuja on Monday, Speaker Bankole said the effects of climate change such as drought posed a great threat to the attainment of some of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), especially on poverty, education and sustainable environment.

Bankole, who was represented by Mr Ezuiche Ubani the chairman of the House Committee on Climate Change, noted that Nigeria was working with the UN and other stakeholders to ensure better legislation in order to address the effects of climate change.

He cited the passing of the National Climate Change Commission Bill in June 2009 as example.

The theme of the celebration is “Climate Change and the Challenge of Achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGS)”.
