Nigerian Leader Reiterates Commitment to Air Safety

May 1, 2008

Nigerian President Umaru Yar’adua on Wednesday spoke about Nigeria’s efforts to ensure airport security and air safety in the country’s airspace. Receiving a delegation of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), which called on him in Abuja, Yar’adua noted that air transportation in Nigeria was undergoing transition by involving the private sector.

He said that the transition would be pursued to its logical conclusion.

Yar’adua commended ICAO for assisting Nigeria in the reform of its aviation sector.

According to him, Nigeria will continue to partner with the global aviation regulatory body in ensuring aviation safety in order to play a leading role on the African continent.

The leader of the delegation and president of ICAO, Mr Roberto Kobeh, said the delegation was in Nigeria for a three-day symposium, the first of its kind in Africa.

Kobeh commended the current reforms in the Nigerian aviation sector, noting that the result of ICAO’s last audit of Nigeria in October 2007 was satisfactory.

He noted that Africa had the highest rate of air accidents in the world and that ICAO would work with Nigeria to improve air safety on the continent.
