In spite of the protests from the ‘Save Nigeria’ group against President Umaru Yar’Adua continuing in office, the Nigerian Senate has said it was not contemplating any impeachment procedures against ailing President Yar’Adua who has been out of office since November 23, 2009.
The protesters stormed Abuja on Wednesday and delivered a letter to the Secretary to the Government, Yayale Ahmed, asking the Federal Executive Council to direct the National Assembly to invoke sections 145 and 155 of the constitution, which call for the impeachment of the president and installment of the vice president.
Mr Tunde Bakare, a senior religious leader and some human rights activities led the protest.
Ahmed promised to deliver the letter to the Executive Council and pledged the Acting President’s support to deepen democracy.
Responding to a question while briefing journalists after the plenary session of the upper chamber, the Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information and Media, Senator Anthony Manzo said there was no need for impeachment because the situation in the country was stable.
“There is a subsisting resolution on the ground. We believe that the situation is stable.
“Impeachment is not something we are contemplating at this time,’’ he said.
Manzo was apparently referring to the concurrent resolution of both chambers of the National Assembly, asking Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan to act for President Umaru Yar’Adua who is currently receiving medical attention.
On the prevention of the ‘Save Nigeria’ group’s rally members from gaining access into the National Assembly, Manzo said that the leadership of the Senate did not instruct the security agencies to disallow the protesters from coming into the Assembly.
”I am not aware that they were barred from entering the National Assembly. The leadership and indeed the Senate are always ready to receive anybody,’’ he said.
