Nigeria’s Minister of State for Power, Malam Nuhu Wya, said the 6,000 megawatts of electricity, promised by the Nigerian government by December was achievable.
Wya, who was in Gombe State in northern Nigeria to inspect some power projects, told the Deputy Governor of Gombe State John Yoriyo on Friday that the Dadinkowa Dam, which he visited, was capable of generating electricity that could serve the entire North-East sub-region, when completed.
He described the State as the powerhouse of the North-East zone because of its abundant deposits of coal and other minerals which “are yet to be exploited.”
The minister commended the efforts of the Ashaka Cement Company to exploit the Maiganga coal mine to generate power.
Responding, Yoriyo said the state government was in support of President Umaru Yar’adua’s seven-point agenda, stressing that the importance of electricity to the country’s socio-economic growth could never be over-emphasized.
He, however, urged the ministry to ensure that contractors handling power projects across the country successfully completed the projects.
