Map of NigeriaKwara State in north-central Nigeria is to tackle the menace of beggars on the streets of Ilorin, the state capital, the Commissioner for Social Development, Culture and Tourism, AbdulGaniyu Dele, said during an in interview in Ilorin.

AbdulGaniyu Dele said the government had opened discussions with the officials of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) on how to tackle the problem.

The Commissioner gave assurance that the government would enforce the law which makes street-begging illegal to tackle the problem.

Dele said the need to involve the Immigration Service became necessary because the beggars were non-Nigerians, stressing that whatever happens to them in the process of getting them off the streets could affect the image of the country

According to him, the beggars are in traditional, commercial and political categories, adding that the government had done much to rid the streets of the menace of beggars and destitute persons.

He said the ministry would soon establish an Enforcement Unit to further assist in making the street free of beggars, destitute persons and lunatics.

According to Commissioner Dele, the government has been providing psychiatric services to arrested destitute people and lunatics in rehabilitation centers before sending them back to their various home states.
