Obama Sweeps Virginia, Maryland, DC for Democrats; McCain Wins for GOP

February 12, 2008

Barack ObamaSenator Barack Obama is projected to sweep the Democratic Party presidential primary elections held Tuesday in Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia. Republican Senator John McCain is projected to do the same for his party.

With most of the results counted, Obama has about 63 percent of the vote in Virginia. With wins Tuesday, he is expected to overcome the slim lead that Senator Hillary Clinton had in the total number of delegates needed to win their party’s nomination.

McCain is on his way to a narrow victory in Virginia, after facing strong competition from former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee.
As early results come in, U.S. media project Obama and McCain also winning the primaries of their respective parties in Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Also Tuesday, Clinton campaign aide Mike Henry announced his resignation, the second staffing shake-up in two days.

On Sunday, Clinton hired a new campaign manager Maggie Williams to replace Patty Solis Doyle.

Clinton is already looking past Tuesday’s primaries to contests March 4 in Texas and Ohio, where polls show the former first lady in the lead.

Nationwide, McCain has already won more than half of the delegates needed to secure the Republican nomination. But Huckabee has vowed to stay in the race.
