Ohio is Too Close to Call, According to March 1-3 Survey By Decision Analyst

March 3, 2008

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are locked in a tight race in Ohio, according to a statewide survey of 692 registered voters planning to vote in the March 4th Democratic Primary. The survey was conducted March 1-3 by Decision Analyst, a major national survey research firm. Decision Analyst projections indicate that if the election were held today, the results would split 51% for Obama and 49% for Clinton. This differential is too small to be statistically significant. The survey’s margin of error is approximately 3 percentage points, plus or minus, at a 90% level of confidence.

“The Democratic Primary in Ohio between Clinton and Obama is a toss-up at this point,” said Jerry W. Thomas, President/CEO of Decision Analyst. “The Democratic race in Ohio shows momentum on Clinton’s side in the past few days.”

The issues of greatest importance to those who plan to vote in the Democratic Primary are the following (in order of importance): providing good healthcare for everyone (chosen by 37%); making the economy stronger and better (30%); bringing the troops home from Iraq (27%); reducing gasoline prices and the cost of energy (23%); reducing unemployment, and creating more job opportunities (21%); and leadership (ability to manage government, work with world leaders, and get things done) (18%).

Decision Analyst projections indicate John McCain would win the Republican Primary over Mike Huckabee, 59% to 35%, respectively, with Ron Paul at 6%. These results are based on interviews with 299 registered voters planning to vote in the March 4th Republican Primary in Ohio. The survey’s margin of error is 5 percentage points, plus or minus, at a 90% level of confidence.

The issues of greatest importance to those who will vote in the Republican Primary are the following: fighting terrorism (31%); making the economy stronger and better (29%); character (honesty, ethics, and integrity of candidate) (25%); protecting the U.S. from illegal immigration (24%); leadership (ability to manage government, work with world leaders, and get things done) (21%); reducing gasoline prices and the cost of energy (19%); and reducing dependence on foreign oil (18%).
