The Union of the Forces for Change candidate in Togo’s presidential election, Jean Pierre Fabre, has contested the results published by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI).
“I do not recognize at all, Mr. Faure Gnassingbe’s alleged victory,” Mr. Fabre told APA.
According to the results proclaimed on Saturday evening by the CENI’s Chairman, Issifou Taffa Tabiou, Faure Gnassingbe has polled 1,243,044 votes in this single-round election, against 692,584 for Jean-Pierre Fabre, out of a total of 2,040,546 votes cast.
“I completely reject the figures released and the procedure used by the CENI for the release of those results, which have not been checked or validated through the very procedure set up by the CENI itself,” he said.
He condemned the silence of the international community’s representatives, who have seen this “show,” adding that he would call his supporters to stage a protest march.
Togolese incumbent President Faure Gnassingbe has received 60.9 per cent of the votes (1,243,044) at the end of the 4 March presidential election, according to the partial results published by the CENI, on Saturday evening.
“Following are the figures obtained by the various candidates :
Agboyibo Yaovi 60,388 votes ;
Kodjo Mensa Agebyome Gabriel 17,397 ;
Lawson Jean Nicolas Mensan 6,029 ;
Kagbara Bassabi 8,357 ;
Adjamagbo Johnson Kafui 1,451 ;
Fabre Jean Pierre 69, 2584 ;
Gnassingbe Faure Essonzimna 1, 243, 044.
“Based on the votes obtained, the candidate Gnassingbe Faure Essozimna is tentatively elected as President of the Republic at the end of the 4 March 2010 election,” CENI chairman Issifou Taffa Tabiou said.
The CENI will hand over these results to the Constitutional Court within eight days, with all required documents.
“After that, all appeals will be filed to that institution, which will proclaim the final results,” Mr. Tabiou said, adding that “The minutes of their meeting will be sent to the Constitutional Court, with the entire election documents from the polling stations and the different local CENI offices.”
Some 3,273,069 voters were expected to go to the polls on Thursday to elect a new leader from seven candidates, including incumbent President Faure Gnassingbe.
The actual number of voters was 2,119,829, with 79,283 invalid ballots and 2,040,546 votes cast, representing a 64.68 per cent turnout.
