Over 1000 Observers Deployed for Rwandan Parliamentary Polls

September 16, 2008

About 1,242 election observers have been deployed to observe the Rwandan parliamentary polls for the chamber of deputies which kicked off early Monday morning at all polling stations throughout the country.

According to the Rwandan electoral commission executive secretary Charles Munyaneza, over 40 organizations have deployed their observers to about 17,000 different polling stations in the country. There are about 4.7 million Rwandan eligible voters registered to participate in the exercise that runs from Monday to Thursday.

“We have deployed a considerable number of election observers in this exercise and we hope they will do their work according to international observation guidelines,” Munyaneza said, reminding all observers to ensure impartiality while conducting their duties.

APA has reliably established that the international observers are about 770 officials more than the local observers who are about 443, including over 100 local and international journalists covering the elections. Some of the international organizations include those from the European Union, the Commonwealth, all foreign missions in Rwanda, the African Union, COMESA, the East African Legislative Assembly and over 10 electoral commission heads from different African countries. Also among the observers are all polling agents of the three political parties; the Rwanda Patriotic Party, Liberal Party and Social Democratic Party (PSD) and those of the sole independent candidate.

Claudette Kalinda, a Rwandan electoral official, told APA in an interview on Monday morning that about 62,000 commission officials have been deployed to all polling centers and stations in the country.
